Analysis of uncertainty in an emerging filed in engineering that addresses the design of a system in condition of limited knowledge. Since uncertainty embraces any engineer's activity it is extremely important to be aware of and effectively deal with it. In the recent years new techniques have been developed for uncertainty treatment in engineering, ranging from non-probabilistic to the wide class of probabilistic approaches. Also terms like robustness analysis, reliability analysis or uncertainty quantification have become part of the engineering vocabulary. The course aims to give student a general insight into the problem of uncertainty, explaining how it affects the initial design phase and what tools can be adopted to work in a condition of limited knowledge. During the course students will develop a project where uncertainty analysis will be applied to FE numerical models to increase the system performances.
