Considering Grid Constrains in Energy-Economic Model.

Energy-economic models fail to consider the physical limitations of the electrical grid. The disregard for this fact may result in the phenomena known as congestion, a shortage of transmission capacity in the grid, which ultimately implies an economic loss. In this work we will employ the modelling software GAMS to model the set of equations necessary to build a DC linear power flow system. Then we aim to represent with a satisfactory level of accuracy the Polish grid and to use this model with past energy-economic studies in order to observe how the optimal mix of fuels to be installed will vary when taking into consideration the physical constrains of the grid.

Rosa Valentina (University of Genoa)

Mathematical modeling of the Polish electricity supply with integration of large-scale wind power and use of energy storage.

This project is the result of a four-month research internship at the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow, Poland, within the framework of the SMP (Student Mobility for Placement) Erasmus. The purpose of this project was to develop two models: the first model was developed in GAMS language and the second one was developed using TIMES model generator - which is written in GAMS code. The goal of the first model (GAMS model) is to plan the construction of new electric capacity in Poland up to 2050, minimizing the total system cost considering two different cases: the first scenario without any climate policy initiative and the second one with carbon tax and emissions ceilings. The second model (TIMES_STG_PL) has the purpose to make a sensitivity analysis, and thus to estimate the needed energy storage capacity to deal with the surplus of electricity produced by the supposed mass installation of wind power within the modeling horizon, considering 42 different wind profile. To preserve the Earth and limit losses (energy embedded, CO2 emission…), EDF

Modeling of development of Polish energy system. Transport sector.

The specific objective of this study is to provide a model for the transport sector of Poland, and to analyze the effect of the European policies on biofuels on transport sector. This will also enable to have a framework for a transport sub-model which can be later integrated to a model covering all sub sectors. To achieve this, it was necessary to master the TIMES software which will be presented in more details in another section.

Manon PERNIN

Impacts of the implementation of European Union policy Emission Trading System on Polish power sector

The subject was vague for I had to work for a project of the team but my work was clearly defined when I was at work. The first week, I realized a webpage for my tutors website linked to the university website. Then, I worked on a website that provides data of a database in order to simplify the data access. First, I worked on the code, so I used several languages (SQL, Java and html) for the following tasks: (i) fix encountered mistakes into the code, (ii) create the code to display the results in the parts that arent usable, (iii) Implement the registration part and the administration part, (iv)implement some restrictions in the pages access. I have also worked on the design of the website by creating some logos and changing the website banner. Finally, Ive worked on an article about the database. In this article, I described the database, I gave some explanations and I provided some energetic results. In order to provide these results I had to search the useful data by using the website but also by writing some SQL queries so as to adapt the database.

Morgane THOMAS

Impacts of the implementation of European Union policy Emission Trading System on Polish power sector

The aim of this work placement was to analyse the aftermaths of the implementation of the European Union policy Emission Trading System on Polish power sector. To carry out this study, I had to develop an energy model using software GAMS. This model was able to simulate the evolution of Polish power sector according to different energy scenarios based on EU policy. Then, I wrote an article analysing the results. This article will be suggested to a scientific Polish magazine to be published. Finally, all along my work, I did bibliographical research in order to base my data and methodology on reliable sources.

Development of a model with GAMS as to optimize the use of biomass in Poland.

To preserve the Earth and limit losses (energy embedded, CO2 emission…), EDF Polska is interested in a study to use biomass as bio electricity. It could permit, after the development of a model with GAMS software, to analyze energy and CO2 emissions embedded in biomass delivery to EDF Polska plants. Our work was in this perspective. Indeed, the scientific objective of the work is to develop this model that will support decision-making process of EDF Polska, by showing the optimal supply chain of biomass in sense of minimization of total energy embedded in its processing and transportation. The goal of the model is to calculate energy embedded and GHG emissions for biomass delivery to EDF Polska Plants.

First of all, the data that we needed were noted, as the energy and CO2 embedded for planting or for the transport of this biomass, for example.

When it was done, the model has had to be improved so as to become as accurate as possible and we showed what factor consumes more energy and emits more CO2 in order to minimize the impact of biomass on the environment.

Study on transboundary air pollution and calcul about acidification in Poland

First a short study on air pollution in Europe and especially on The Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution (LRTAP) has been done. Then a calculation of a dispersion matrix for SO2, based on deposition, has been carried out. Then, this matrix has been used to simulate decreases of emissions in some places of Europe and their consequences. It has also been used to optimize invest in SO2 emission decrease. This part of the work has been performed on GAMS an algebraic modeling system used in the lab. In this part, the impact of one country emission on border countries has been showed, especially in Scandinavia and Poland areas.

After this work, a calculation of exceedance of critical loads for acidification in Poland has been achieved. For this work the main point was to get familiar with the process of critical loads for acidification and to manage to fit databases together. Using EMEP deposition data for sulphur and nitrogen for the year 2006 the calculation revealed a 54 percent of Poland ground in exceedance of critical loads. The database is administrated with oracle software; exploitation and manipulation of data were made with TOAD for oracle sql software.

Finally different calculations were made in order to show the relationship between high emitters and some sensitive areas.

Florent SARRAZY

Global comparison between France and Poland for two atmospheric pollutants.

The project he worked on has been launched three years ago to optimize environment protection investments of EDF group companies in Poland so to meet the sustainable development criteria. The results of the Project are to provide a feedback for building the strategy for the investments into environmental protection for the next 10 to 20 years while answering the increasing need for energy demand.

The group thus works on atmospheric models of dispersion and analyzes the consequences of these pollutants on the ecosystems and human health. The subject suggested was a comparison between France and Poland for two major atmospheric pollutants the NOx and SOx by using a number of different tools placed at my disposal.

This study showed major differences in the deposition of these pollutants and some various consequences on the ecosystems. The energy policies, the level of life, the geographical localization of the two countries or the brittleness of the environments are as many factors which were analyzed and which contribute to the differences observed at the time of this study.

Development of the model RAINS Poland (EMCO SO2).

He took part in the ENVIRO project. It is a project launched by EDF Polska in order to “Optimize Environment Protection Investments of EDF Polska Companies to Meet the Sustainable Development Criteria” as its full name describes it. He worked on the dispersion modelling of pollutants and integrated impact assessment with the RAINS model.

Our aim was to develop some parts of the Poland specific version of RAINS. More specifically, the work consisted of modifications and adaptations of the European/Asian version of the emission and control module (EMCO) of the model. We had to manage with several databases, SQL programming, calculations... In the middle of the internship the EMCO module was developed for three pollutants (SO2, NOX, and PM) and we were able to deliver preliminary results. Those results were presented in the project interim report 3. After that we started the development of EMCO NH3.
