Installing Mandriva 2007 Powerpack (x86_64) on HP Pavilion dv9000z

Hardware setup

This line of laptops is customizable on their website, here's what I selected mine to include, and how it works in linux.

Hardware Components

Status under Linux

Notes

‎AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60

Works

An SMP kernel makes good use of both cores

17.0" WSXGA+ Ultra BrightView Widescreen (1440x900) [dual lamp]

Works

Nvidia driver works fine

256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600

Works

used Nvidia binary kernel provided together with instalation DVD

2GB, SDRAM, 2DIMMs

Works

No special procedure required during installation

HP IMPRINT Finish + Microphone + Built in camera

Works/untested

built in microphone(s) works fine (I do not check whether they work both in stereo mode – I do not care about it).

Camera – I do not have idea how to get it work ;(

120GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive

Works

SATA drive (correctly) appears as /dev/sda

Super Multi 8X DVD+/-R/RW w/Double Layer Support

Works/Untested

I do not check whether the ligh scribing feature work. The rest of the features like burning Cds and DVDs seem to be OK

MCP51 High Definition Audio

Partially works

Built in speakers and built in microphones work. Headphones and external microphone seem to be out of work. No clue about SPDiff.

All the missing features might be supported with the newest ALSA driver; (ToDo next year – I hope).

MCP51 Ethernet Controller (ethernet card)

Works

No special procedure required during installation

BCM4310 UART (WiFi card)

Works

Works fine enough with the provided with this distribution ndiswrapper and the newest windows drivers get from HP.

I found somwhere that first you have to „warm up” that card under preinstalled windows, then try to install it under Linux. Just in case I followed that advise.

High Capacity 8 Cell Li-Ion Battery

Works

Linux knows all about this through /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/info

This laptop is operating under Kernel version:
Linux localhost 2.6.17-5mdv, SMP, 2006 x86_64 AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60 GNU/Linux
