About (Semantic) Wikis

“Semantic Wikis try to combine the strengths of Semantic Web (machine processable, data integration, complex queries) and Wiki (easy to use and contribute, strongly interconnected, collaborativeness) technologies. In the future, Semantic Wiki systems might play an important role for “knowledge acquisition” enabling non-technical users to contribute to the Semantic Web.

Wikis are collaborative environments for authoring Web content. Some of the key aspects of Wikis are:

  • they “hide” the complexity of Web technologies (like HTML) from non-technical users,
  • their content is usually strongly connected via hyperlinks, and
  • they allow for continuous changes of the content that are immediately accessible and usable. ”

I have some experience with:

  • AceWiki → ACE (Attempto Controlled English), natural language for representation
    • “AceWiki is a semantic wiki that is powerful and at the same time easy to use. Making use of the controlled natural language ACE, the formal statements of the wiki are shown in a way that looks like natural English. In order to help the users to write correct ACE sentences, AceWiki provides a predictive editor. ACE sentences can be translated into OWL which allows us to use the Pellet reasoner to do reasing tasks within the wiki. Evaluation has shown that AceWiki is easy to use.” (source)
  • KnowWE → a semantic knowledge wiki, for distributed knowledge engineering, supports several levels of knowledge formalization, applications: KB development, problem-solving, diagnosis
  • Loki → developed at AGH UST; logic-based KR and inference (Prolog engine), supports semantic annotations, SPARQL, Prolog code; additional plugins for BPMN and visualization of RDF/XML
