Comprehensive development and preparation for the implementation of innovative implant solutions in the treatment of animals, surgical instruments for
their implantology and biodegradable surgical thread for veterinary medicine

POIR.04.01.04-00-0074/17

The project is a comprehensive approach to the issues of orthopedic implantation in veterinary medicine. The aim of the project is:

1) development of modification technology of osseointegratory coatings of orthopedic implants based on hydroxyapatite (HA) and copper nanoparticles (CuNp) and the study of their antibacterial properties;

2) development of technological processes for the manufacture of surgical orthopedic instruments necessary for the proper implantation of the above mentioned implants and

3) development of technologies for the production of bioresorbable surgical threads.

Based on a review of literature and own experience, consortium formulated the folowing hypotheses:

1) by applying appropriate technology to modify osseointegration coatings it is possible to make implants with antibacterial properties;

2) developed instruments will ensure the precise course of surgical procedures, taking into account the delicate structures of articular connections in domestic animals;

3) knowledge of the plasticity model of the material and recrystallization will enable the development of an extrusion and drawing scheme allowing to obtain large plastic deformations and high mechanical properties of the produced wires, giving the possibility of using them as resorbable surgical threads. As part of the implementation of the project, shells will be created that give the implants osteointegrational properties. In addition, the combination of the anti-bacterial properties of CuNp and excellent biocompatibility of HA will be an effective way to reduce the risk of infection after implantation of long-term implants. As part of the project, construction projects and developed technological processes will be made to create surgical orthopedic instruments necessary for the correct implantation of implants. Special resorbable surgical threads will be made of special magnesium and zinc alloys that have good biocompatibility and corrosive properties.
